This Week at Chapter & Vines: Books, Blind Dates & Building Something Different

There are some weeks where it feels like you spend all your time working behind the scenes without much to show for it.

And then there are weeks like this one.

This week at Chapter & Vines, so many of the ideas I’ve been working on quietly started becoming real.

Our Blind Dates Are Officially Packed

One of the biggest jobs this week was getting our Blind Date with a Book editions packed and ready to start making their way out into the world.

And there’s something a little different hidden inside them.

Each Chapter & Vines Blind Date has a QR code that gives readers the option to check the book before opening it — without revealing the title, author or any of the details that make it a blind date.

You can enter a few books you’ve recently read and the system will check whether the hidden book is already familiar to you.

If you decide to create a free Chapter & Vines reader account, your reading history can also be saved, meaning you won’t have to keep entering the same books every time.

The aim is simple: keep the surprise, but reduce the chances of going home with a book you’ve already read.

I haven’t personally come across another Blind Date with a Book doing it quite like this yet, and I’m very excited to see how readers use it.

The same feature will also be making its way onto the online Chapter & Vines platform.

Our First Silent Reading Evening

This week also brought people into the Chapter & Vines space for Silent Reading.

There is something genuinely lovely about seeing an idea that existed on paper suddenly become a room full of people, books, cups of tea and quiet reading.

Chapter & Vines was always intended to be somewhere you could come on your own just as comfortably as you could come with friends.

No awkward introductions. No pressure to perform. No requirement to have finished a particular book.

Just bring something you want to read, settle in and enjoy some uninterrupted time with it.

Our next Silent Reading session is already on the calendar, and because Chapter & Vines is based within a gated community, advance registration is required so we can arrange access for everyone attending.

The Reader Platform Is Growing Too

A huge amount of work has also been happening behind the website this week.

Chapter & Vines is developing into much more than somewhere to simply purchase a book.

Readers will have their own Reading Room where they can keep track of what they’ve read, add ratings and notes, and eventually receive better recommendations based on their own reading history.

For authors, the platform is being built to provide something useful too. (Sign up for reader accounts and then you can request access for the author accounts.)

Authors will be able to see information such as how many of their books Chapter & Vines currently has in stock, how many have sold, been loaned or been included in Blind Date editions, along with reader feedback where appropriate.

Publishers and literary professionals have their own areas too.

The goal is to create an ecosystem around books rather than simply another online bookshop.

We Haven’t Forgotten the Makers

Another area that started taking shape this week is a space for makers, artists and suppliers whose products could belong within Chapter & Vines.

Bookmarks, stationery, reader accessories, handmade pieces, products for gift packs and Reader Rituals — there are so many brilliant small businesses creating things that naturally sit alongside books.

I want Chapter & Vines to be somewhere those businesses can be discovered too.

What Chapter & Vines Is Becoming

For a long time I described Chapter & Vines by listing everything it might eventually contain.

A literary salon.

Books.

Events.

Blind Dates.

Reader profiles.

Author discovery.

Creative collaborations.

Community books.

Reading experiences.

This week, for the first time, it feels less like a list of ideas and more like an actual system beginning to connect.

There is still plenty to build.

But there are books on the shelves.

There are Blind Dates packed.

There are readers walking through the door.

There are authors joining the platform.

And there are more events coming.

That feels like a pretty good place to end the week.

Here’s to the next chapter.
